Mission

The Belgian Lung Foundation is a public utility foundation bringing patients, the public and healthcare professionals together to take the societal responsibility to improve respiratory health in Belgium.

 

Vision

The Belgian Lung Foundation aspires to correctly inform our citizens about respiratory health and to advocate for improved respiratory prevention and healthcare for all people living with or at risk for developing respiratory disease

 

Domains of action = the pillars of the Belgian Lung Foundation

The activities of our foundation are situated within four action domains that will facilitate respiratory healthcare and prevention: Living with respiratory disease, Smokefree generation, Clean air for all, and Let’s move.

 

Together, let’s improve the quality of respiratory health in Belgium.

Our lungs, vital organs that are often overlooked, play a central role in our health. However, their role is often underestimated or misunderstood. We forget that they are essential for our physical and mental well-being.

By taking care of our lungs today — through prevention, a healthy lifestyle and awareness of the dangers — we can not only avoid serious diseases, but also ensure a better quality of life.

1. 

The lungs are important for breathing

The lungs help us take in oxygen from the air and remove carbon dioxide from the blood. Oxygen is very important for all the cells in our body, and removing carbon dioxide is also necessary. This process is essential for survival and proper functioning. If the lungs do not work well, it affects not only our ability to breathe but also the health of other important organs, such as the heart and brain.

2. 

They are exposed to constant threats

The lungs are constantly in contact with the outside air, which exposes them to many pollutants and irritants, such as cigarette smoke, air pollution, chemicals, and even pathogens like viruses and bacteria. Prolonged exposure to these things can lead to chronic diseases such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), or lung cancer.

Respiratory diseases are common but often overlooked

Lung diseases affect millions of people around the world but are often not diagnosed properly or are misunderstood. Many people underestimate early symptoms such as a chronic cough, shortness of breath, or fatigue, attributing them to other causes. This lack of attention can lead to delays in diagnosis, while lung diseases are often more treatable if detected early.

The lungs influence quality of life

Healthy lungs help maintain good energy levels, allowing a person to exercise and live actively. In contrast, damaged lungs can limit mobility, cause constant shortness of breath, and significantly reduce quality of life. Simple daily activities such as climbing stairs, walking, or even talking can become very tiring for someone with lung problems.

Prevention is possible

Many lung diseases are predictable and avoidable. By quitting smoking, avoiding polluted environments, adopting an active lifestyle, and ensuring that we live in spaces with good air quality, we can protect our lungs and reduce the risk of developing serious respiratory diseases. Prevention through simple actions is one of the best ways to ensure long-term lung health.

Proper lung function is also important for mental well-being. A person who breathes well feels less stressed and has more energy. On the other hand, respiratory disorders can lead to anxiety, stress, or chronic fatigue, affecting sleep quality and the ability to fully enjoy life.
